San Francisco, CA – Enjoy The Work, a startup advisory firm that works with 35+ companies including Tipalti, HoneyBook, and inDinero, recently announced the addition of new partner, Ned Renzi.
Renzi joins ETW with a background in venture capital. As a cofounding partner at Birchmere Ventures and Birchmere Labs, his expertise runs deep as it relates to seed and early stage SaaS and internet companies. Since Birchmere’s founding in 1996, the firm’s companies have achieved a cumulative market valuation of $15 billion.
Renzi has witnessed firsthand how venture has shifted over time. Today, new funds rapidly emerge by the hundreds, and both investment size and deal velocity has exploded. More deals are done by more professionals at a faster pace and for larger checks than ever before.
But for someone like Renzi, more doesn’t necessarily mean better. The investor-founder intimacy once common in The Valley has become increasingly rare. Deal making and advising are different constructs, and venture firms increasingly focus on the former, to the detriment of the latter.
It’s not that venture investors want to be more distant from their founders, it’s simply the nature of the market. VC incentives are tied to generating deal flow and making investments in a highly competitive environment. As such, there is much less time to mentor, coach, or teach.
“If venture continues to evolve the way it has, the startup ecosystem will see a growing number of founders who are expected to figure things out on their own, with limited coaching,” says Renzi.
Following a desire to serve founders on a more holistic basis, Renzi was intrigued by the opportunity to once again work closer with fewer entrepreneurs. Enjoy The Work provides him the infrastructure to do just that.
“Enjoy The Work has a phenomenal knowledge base,” says Renzi. “Whether it be a product launch, a go-to-market strategy, a pricing strategy, hiring advice, fundraising advice, building a deck… ETW has systematized and documented every step of the founder’s journey.”
Renzi represents the second Enjoy The Work advisor with a background in venture capital. His addition strengthens the firm’s ability to help founders navigate the complexities of investor engagement and fundraising.
